Every school year the Stoughton Police hold open gym at the O'Donnell Middle School for middle school students.
The gym is monitored by police officers and gives the children of the town a chance to interact with them in a positive environment.
Statistics show that juveniles are the perpetrators / victims of crime at the highest rates between the hours of 3 PM and 6 PM.
It's no coincidence that these are the hours that children are out of school while mom and dad are still at work.
The open gym gives kids a safe place to go during those hours since it is open from the close of school until 5 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
No sport is off limits and equipment is provided.
The rules of the open gym will be as follows:
-All participants must fill out and return a permission slip signed by a parent
-There will be no fighting, swearing, or geeneral unruliness in the gym
-There will be no eating or drinking in thee gym
-Once in the gym, participants may not go bback into the school building
-All participants must sign in and out withh the times of arrival and departure
-All equipment will be signed in and out. Failure to return equipment can result in
suspension from the program
-Late bus passes will be provided at 3:30 PPM
-All participants will adhere to the instruuctions of officers
 Failure
to comply with any of these rules will mean suspension from the program.
The gym may have to be closed earlier for operational reasons, but this
will be kept to a minimum. This is a free program to the public so participants
must be picked up before 5 pm. The doors to the gym will be closed and
the monitor will be gone at this time at the latest. Monitors will not
be required to wait for tardy parents. If you can not make the pick up
time, we suggest your child take the late bus at 3:45 pm.
Come November, on Thursdays, the open gym is held at the Stoughton bowling center and winter bowling leagues are formed.
The bowling leagues run from 4 PM until 6 PM and are monitored by the Juvenile Officers. The program is still free and an end of season pizza party is hosted at the venue.
